FIELD TRIP | DOCENT-LED TOURS

Please install Flash® and turn on Javascript.

Field trips are Monday – Friday usually from 10:00 AM or 10:30 AM – 12:00 – 12:30 PM (approximately 2 hours). I am flexible with the time, due to traffic and school hours. Please call (323) 936 -7141 ext. 131 to schedule and ask questions. Please pick the date and I will check availability, I cannot pick the date for you.
Age Groups: 1st Grade and higher
KCCLA field trips are free and we do cover the cost for ONE BUS PER SCHOOL up to $350. When a Teacher (or Coordinator) calls or emails me to schedule a field trip, I will email or fax you a Bus Transportation Form after the filed trip has been scheduled. The Teacher then fills out the form and sends it back to me (fax (323) 936-5712 ext 131 or email, I sign the form at the bottom which authorizes KCCLA to pay for the bus and send it back to the Teacher. The Teacher schedules the bus through LAUSD (or any other bus transportation service your school uses, we will accommodate the cost of any bus service in Southern California) by sending the bus form to your bus transportation service. The bill is sent to KCCLA 4 – 6 weeks later.
PLEASE REMEMBER THAT KCCLA DOES NOT SCHEDULE OR PROVIDE BUSES – WE JUST COVER THE COST.
KCCLA CANNOT cover the cost of any school within five miles of KCCLA.
If you have sent the Bus Form, please notify Rick Phillips at (323) 936-7141 ext. 131 that you have faxed the form on the day you have sent the form. I usually will fax it back immediately or on the same day I receive a fax (with the exception of holidays, weekends, or outside meetings). My fax is (323) 936-5712.
If you receive the fax, you DO NOT need to notify me. Only call or email me if you DID NOT receive the signed bus form.
The MAXIMUM number of students you may bring is 60 (usually an entire grade of 2 classes and I can accept over 65 or 70 in case you need to bring parents, chaperones, or more students if the class is larger).
The MINIMUM number of students to qualify FOR BUS TRANSPORTION COST COVERAGE is 20.
I am no longer taking large groups for the following reasons:
The KCCLA building's size - because of the cramped space in the museum and LA Korea Center next door. 40 – 60 students maximize on listening and interacting. Security issues. Budget constraints.
The KCCLA Field trip consists of:
  1. Greeting and Introduction in the KCCLA Auditorium on the 3rd Floor
  2. 14 minute video presentation "Images of Korea"
  3. Tour of the Los Angeles Korea Center (the building next door to KCCLA which displays the most recent trends in Korea's technical and entertainment culture – including educational kiosks, online games, animation, short film, tourism to Korea and the latest technology of Korea). This is a self-guided tour.
  4. Tour of the Korean Cultural Center Museum and Art Gallery. The first floor museum opened a new exhibition in October 2008 called "Emerging Country in East Asia - Elegant Life of Noble Class during the Joseon Period". The exhibit displays a variety of traditional crafts, embroidery, and relics from the Joeson Dynasty (1392-1910) including a sarang bang (study room) and anbang (wife's room main chamber of the traditional house). I will guide and interact more with the students during this part of the tour
  5. If time permits, students assemble a 3D puzzle – Either a Korean traditional house, the Gobukseon (Turtle Ship) or Banoakseon (Naval ship during the Joseon Dynasty 16th century). If we do not have time to do or finish the workshop, students take it home with them to put together at home or for a class project the following day.
The following conduct, behavior and acts are prohibited:
  1. Wandering around the KCCLA Buildings* without permission from a Teacher, Adult Supervisor or Chaperone or without adult supervision.
  2. Leaving the KCCLA Buildings without permission from a Teacher, Adult Supervisor or Chaperone or without adult supervision
  3. Entering restrooms without permission from a Teacher, Adult Supervisor or Chaperone
  4. Running, boisterous behavior and fighting.
  5. Using personal equipment (such as computers, cellular phones and audio players) that is disruptive, noisy or unsafe
  6. Disturbing the peace including, but not limited to, talking loudly.
  7. Smoking.
  8. Littering
  9. Making crude remarks or using inappropriate language.
  10. Using Illicit Drugs or Alcohol
  11. Harassing patrons or staff.
  12. Engaging in exhibitionism; voyeurism; or physical, sexual or verbal abuse.
  13. Destroying, damaging, defacing or misusing display items or materials ANYWHERE on KCCLA property, including artifacts, equipment, furniture. This includes, but is not limited to; 1) writing in, highlighting or annotating the KCCLA library, art gallery or museum materials or artwork; 2) cutting, tearing and removing pages and parts of pages from any materials 3) misusing, altering or tampering with computer hardware or software; 4) applying graffiti; 5) unauthorized rearranging of furniture; and pilfering any display materials.
  14. Misusing restrooms, including laundering personal belongings, bathing and not keeping the restrooms clean.
  15. Consuming food or beverages. Food or drink, including water bottles, must be stored inside backpacks, purses or briefcases, or consumed before entering the building.
* The KCCLA Buildings include the Korean Cultural Center, Los Angeles - 5505 Wilshire Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90036 and the Los Angeles Korea Center – 5509 Wilshire Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90036
PARKING and ENTRANCE
Buses usually drop and pick up students IN FRONT OF the KCCLA building on Wilshire or the side of the building on Dunsmuir. Buses can also enter the parking lot in the back, but sometimes the lot is filled, so it is difficult to maneuver the bus. Buses usually park at the LA Tarpits (George Page Museum Park, LACMA), which is about 5 blocks (less than half a mile) west of KCCLA on the corner of Wilshire and Curson or on Dunsmuir St. if there are enough spaces. There is free bus parking at the LA Tarpits area for buses.
LUNCH
KCCLA does not provide a lunch venue for field trips. I recommend that teachers take their students to the LA Tarpits/George Page Museum park area near the Los Angeles County of Modern Art; there is a lot of space and sunshine. The park is 5 blocks west of KCCLA on the corner of Curson and Wilshire, less than a quarter of a mile on the right side. Bus parking is free on Curson and 6th Street (on block north parallel to Wilshire).
If weather conditions are poor, I suggest the Farmer’s Market on 3rd and Fairfax.
Please call me if you have any questions or leave a message. I do have openings, but they are starting to fill up.
Thank you,
Rick Phillips
