The Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles & Korea MINHWA Association proudly presents the third exhibition of 2019 LA Art Project, < Minhwa: The Elegance of Korean Folk Paintings Exhibition >, which will take place from July 12th to July 25th at the Korean Cultural Center Art Gallery, located at 5505 Wilshire Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90036.
This special exhibition is held in celebration of Korean National Medal of Great Master Song Kyu Tae and will reclaim the value of Korean folk paintings while sharing the beauty and traditions of traditional art with people.
By definition, Minhwa is "painting of the people" or "popular painting". This type of painting was often the work of anonymous craftsmen who faithfully adhered to the styles, canons and genres inherited from the past. Minhwa also involved a magical dimension. They were believed to possess beneficial virtues and to protect the owner and his family from evil forces. They feature popular themes such as cranes, rocks, water, clouds, the sun, moon, pine-trees, tortoises, insects and flowers.
"Minhwa: The Elegance of Korean Folk Paintings" comprises 40 paintings and folding screen from 26 Minhwa artists from Korea MINHWA Association and Korea MINHWA Association LA Chapter.
Spanning the major genres and themes of traditional Minhwa, this exhibition presents audiences with the opportunity to encounter Minhwa in all its glory whilst taking a glimpse at the mythology, beliefs and views of the Korean people.
