SEVEN BEATS Screening by National Dance Company of Korea

Date: Thursday, April 24, 2025
Time: 07:00PM - 08:30PM

[‘Seven Beats’ - Dance] - Thursday, April 24th at 7:00 pm

Duration: 70 minutes

The National Dance Company's Seven Beats (Gamuak Chilchae) is a work that introduces a new charm of Korean dance by utilizing the Chilchae rhythm, primarily used in Nongak (traditional Korean farmer's music). "Chilchae" refers to a fast, dazzling rhythm used during Nongak parades, named after the seven strikes of the gong in each beat. In this performance, the Chilchae rhythm is created live on stage using a loop station (a sound device that records rhythms on the spot and creates a repeating effect), with live music and the dancers’ movements adding to the composition’s tension.

Seven musicians harmoniously blend traditional Korean instruments like Haegeum, Ajaeng, Janggu, Jing, Buk, and Saenghwang with Western instruments such as drums, guitar, and bass to reinterpret the Chilchae rhythm with a fresh sense. Additionally, seven dancers continually unravel the rushing Chilchae rhythm with unique movements, presenting creative energy.

In particular, this work is designed to be enjoyed even by audiences who are unfamiliar with the Chilchae rhythm. It naturally draws the audience in while incorporating humor throughout, making it approachable. A special appearance by Kim Jun-su, a popular member of the National Changgeuk Company, adds a humorous moment. In a scene where he repeatedly chants the rhythm "one-two-three one-two," introducing an irregular beat mixed with three-beat and two-beat rhythms, the audience erupts in laughter and applause. Understanding the features of the Chilchae rhythm makes the experience more interesting, but even without prior knowledge, the energy and passionate performances on stage can be enjoyed joyfully. This work is expected to offer an experience of how traditional arts can resonate with contemporary audiences.
