2021 Korean History & Culture Webinar for American Educators

2021 Korean History & Culture  Webinar for American Educators

Korean Cultural Center, Los Angeles (KCCLA; Director Wijin Park), along with National Korean Studies (NKS; Director Sung Soon Kim), will host the for three days from Monday, Jun 28 to Wednesday, Jun 30, 2021 (13:00-16:00 PST).

This year’s webinar will highlight the Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum approved by the California State Board of Education, which includes Korean history and culture, as well as lesson plans on the Korean American immigration history.

Webinar attendees will include many educators from the Los Angeles Unified School District, as well as from other states such as North Carolina, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina, Arizona, Ohio, Washington, Wisconsin, Colorado, Tennessee, and Florida. Over 100 registrants are hailing from 14 different states and who are university professors, K-12 teachers, administrators, counselors, special education teachers, and more.

?With its start on Monday, June 28 at 1pm PST, the webinar will begin with a welcoming message from KCCLA’s director Wijin Park. Lectures and session topics include the LA Civil Unrest and the Korean American immigration history, Dosan Ahn Chang Ho and the Korean National Association Hall, Dr. Sammy Lee and Korean American leaders, Korea’s economic development and growth of democracy, the Korean Friendship Bell and the relationship between Korea and the US, Korean traditional music including Samulnori, characteristics of Korean language, an introduction and discussion of the textbook Teaching East Asia: Korea, and more.

The seminar started in 2004 as a collaboration of the Korean Cultural Center LA, and educators Mary Connor and Sung Soon Kim. Along with the annual seminar and the numerous visiting seminars where the seminar was brought to each school-site to be held, the seminar took place in 36 different states across the U.S. in front of a total of about 3,500 teachers, professors, administrators, and more.

?Participating LAUSD teachers will be eligible for 1 point of LAUSD Salary Point for completing the 15 hours of the webinar (including the Sijo webinar that is being held in collaboration) and by submitting a Korean history and culture lesson plan and an evaluation of this webinar. Participants will also be eligible to apply for the USC’s 4 Continuing Education Units as professional development units.

?In addition to this webinar, KCCLA has been holding a Korean Culture Outreach Seminar, which has been popular with educators in the region since 2014.
