Ep 6. Piri | English Gugak Series

Date: Tue, Nov 23, 2021 - Wed, Dec 08, 2021
Time: 09:00AM - 05:00PM

The Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles (Wijin Park, Director) and Korean traditional music (Gugak) artist, Seo-Yoon Jang present a special online project, English Gugak Series 'Korean Traditional Music 101: Sound of Korea' Ep 6. Piri on Wednesday, November 24, 2021 on the KCCLA YouTube channel.

The sixth episode is 'Piri' which is a wind instrument made up of bamboo. It can be divided into two parts, the body and the mouthpiece. A double reed made of two layers of bamboo creates a unique timbre. Because of the size, you might think it would have a small sound but it has a wide dynamic range, big enough to lead an ensemble. However, the amount of air that can go through the reed at a time is small so in order to create a big firm sound, it takes years of hard training to grow the endurance that can support.

'Sound of Korea' is a new series made by KTM101 to introduce Korean traditional instruments and vocal genres. Subscribe for more episodes to be brought to you every other week.
